Bacteriophage cocktails are strictly for bacterial infections, not for viral or fungal infections.  Some common bacterial disease exceptions are Lyme’s disease, Tuberculosis, Chlamydia, Mycoplasma, Ureaplasma, H. Pylori. Although, there are conditions where phages can be used for beneficial effect as an adjunct to the main therapy prescribed for the condition.

This question is practically impossible to answer because each patient’s case is different, and most of our patients have been dealing with chronic infections for many years or even decades. Their cases have a variety of complications or challenges that we approach on an individual basis – so no two are alike and success definition in every case is different.

  1. “Local” treatment – (most effective) – Patients visit the Eliava Phage Therapy Center from around the world to combat antibiotic-resistant infections with Eliava’s unique collection of therapeutic bacteriophages.  Treatment at our clinic under the “complex medical service plan” includes necessary diagnostics from bacteriological analyses to routine blood work, ultrasound, CT, MRI and all medical tests deemed necessary by our medical team, specialist physician consultations including internal medicine, urology, gynecology, pediatrics, endocrinology, neurology,  ear, nose, and throat specialist, dermatology, rehabilitation massage and surgical consultations and treatment with standard bacteriophage preparations and other medicines.
  2. “Distance” treatment with our multidisciplinary team of physicians involved. The package includes an Initial telemedicine meeting with the doctor, Providing treatment courses with the most suitable phages or custom phages at an additional cost, Commencing phage therapy at home, and modifying the treatment plans as necessary under the doctor’s observation. Additional telemedicine consultations or bacteriological analysis if needed, Evaluation and conclusion of the performed therapy, Repeat bacteriological analysis, Follow up by EPTC team.

Although, our physician appointments are scheduled carefully to ensure that each patient has adequate time with their attending doctor and the medical team we can sometimes see patients who visit us unplanned and try our best to fit them into our tight schedule. Although, please be sure to contact us prior to your visit so we can be informed of your case and give necessary recommendations. 

For the first day at the clinic please bring all the appropriate medical documentation that have been discussed via email and a passport!

Additionally, due to the recent pandemic, a negative PCR test for COVID-19 done maximum 72 hours prior to the visit or a COVID passport..

The attending doctor will be chosen depending on the case, additionally, the patient will get a consultation with other specialists if the doctor deems it necessary or the patient starts exhibiting new symptoms. Other than the medical staff, coordinators will guide you the entire way to make the whole experience more comfortable and adjustable, and a massage therapist to ensure a relaxing stay at the clinic.

All the necessary investigations and consultations to evaluate the patient’s general well-being, such as ultrasound checks, bloodwork, bacterial testing. Additional invasive or non-invasive procedures that will help our medical team to determine the best options of the treatment for the patient will be held depending on the initial work-up results.

We recommend coming to the clinic for at least 10-14 days to initiate therapy, but the treatment will continue after your departure.

We prefer that our patients be stable enough to travel on an airplane. As we are an outpatient clinic, we cannot provide 24-hour observation or emergency help immediately. Patients that require 24-hour oxygen need to provide a letter from their physician confirming their ability to travel.

Even though cases of petty thefts, robbery, and mugging are reported everywhere in Europe, the crime rate of this country is one of the lowest in Europe, making Georgia, a safe country to visit at any time of the year.

While we prefer to have as much information about each patient as possible before their arrival, our clinical experience has allowed us to develop a system that lets us successfully treat patients beginning with testing on site. We do however strictly require having an initial assessment of your case, every patient is evaluated by our medical team on an individual basis and we will make recommendations as to whether phage therapy is appropriate for your case.

The Eliava Phage Therapy Center offers a Telemedicine program covered by the distance service. This allows patients and physicians to communicate in real-time while also maintaining HIPAA, GDPR, PHIPA/PIPEDA, & HITECH compliance. Physicians can assess a patient’s medical history, perform evaluations, and more using interactive medicine.

Direct and extensive contact with your attending physician who will be curating your case and preparing an individualized treatment plan, so nothing can be missed out in your treatment process. Shared decision making and your full involvement regarding all of the steps necessary for the successful treatment and trying different approaches, you will be a crucial part of the whole process.

 

The clinic uses Doxy.me services. Minimum System Requirements. a Mac/PC/Linux/Chromebook with a camera, microphone, and speakers. an Internet connection with at least 2 Mbps download and upload speeds. We HIGHLY recommend anything above 10-15 Mbps to have a better experience. Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, or Safari 11+. Other than the technical aspect, in order to have a fruitful consultation with a doctor have your questions written down and have all the necessary medical documents at hand.

You will have video meetings with your attending doctor and a multidisciplinary team of physicians will be consulted on your case. During the treatment, our manager of International Relations will make sure the process goes smoothly.

Once the patient becomes eligible for phage therapy, the next step is sending phages to them. Depending on the case, the patient might need the assistance of their local doctor, other than that there are no special preparations to receive the treatment at home.

After checking up the local regulations for phage import and obtaining all the necessary documents we will send the phage parcels with the international courier services. In case of denied approval for the import, the patients might need to fly in to pick up the phages.

Some of the countries allow phage import, but some require an import license or some special permit from the local government. Please contact the local customs services for more details.

A transportation swab that contains transportation media also known as an Amies swab or Eswab is necessary for sending us a clinical sample.

This is determined by phage sensitivity testing, and or after a trial of standard phage preparations. This is decided on an individual basis.

Blood and stool samples are not accepted.

Patients’ full name, age, sex, email, and the type of swab they are sending IN PRINT. In case of having contact with one of our partners please provide their name too.

Considering the patient’s past medical history an empirical treatment can be considered for the previously frequent bacteria. If possible sending an already isolated bacterial strain is also recommended in such cases.
