What are phages?

Phages are part of nature. Without any human involvement, being bacteria’s natural predator, hundreds of billions of phages eliminate the spread of bacteria on our planet every second, keeping the perfect balance.

What is Phage therapy?

Bacteriophage therapy is the use of “good” viruses (bacterial viruses) to treat antibiotic-resistant or chronic bacterial infections. If a patient has a bacterial infection, relevant body fluid or swab is cultured to ascertain the bacteria infecting their body. Once the culture is obtained, various phages are applied to the cultured bacteria to test whether they can be killed by the phages. Once a sensitive bacteriophage is identified, it is used to treat the infection.

Phages even kill antibiotic-resistant bacteria

Phage therapy is a viable alternative treatment for infection, an especially useful tool for chronic and antibiotic-resistant infections. Phage can target multiple antibiotic-resistant infections and also prove advantageous in treating infections that can’t be effectively treated with antibiotics due to poor blood circulation or bacterial biofilms, because of their ability to translocate within wounds and in the body.

Phages have no side effects that are associated with antibiotics

Phage preparations for therapeutic and prophylactic use are made with a selection of bacteriophages with a wide spectrum of activity against the specific disease-causing bacteria. Bacteriophage acts directly and exclusively on the target bacteria to destroy it and help protect the bacterial ecology in the gut. Phage has a twofold action, one is to infect bacteria and the other is to stimulate the immune system and decrease inflammation.

Phage therapy treats post-COVID infections

Phage therapy eliminates the effects of Covid-19, treats secondary bacterial infections and restores the microbiome. EPTC's COVID-19 rehabilitation program combines various diagnostic and therapeutic elements. A key part of this process is physiotherapy as well as pulmonary rehabilitation since fibrous changes in the lungs are common during post-Covid syndrome.

Treating your individual case step by step:

  • Assessment

Having received your analyses, we take samples from an infected area,
isolate the bacterial strain that cause the infection.

  • Sensitivity test

Cultured bacteria are tested against sensitivity to a variety of phages
and the effective phage is identified.

  • Treatment

Our doctors prepare an individual plan for local or remote treatment
with a standard or a custom phage.

Out treatment options:

Local treatment

We will welcome you to our clinic in Tbilisi, Georgia, take time to listen to your questions, conduct in-depth investigations, provide hands-on treatment in the clinic, and education you can take home, so that you can become an active participant in your recovery and future health.

Remote treatment

To those patients who can not travel but can benefit from phage therapy, we will send packages of phages to their country along with treatment recommendations and provide online consultations that are very convenient and help the patients understand their treatment process.

Let us plan your treatment now

For most bacterial infections, there's a phage that can cure it

Eliava Institute has the biggest collection of phages in the world, that allows us to use standard phages, as well as create a custom phage for an individual patient

We treat a wide variety of conditions:

Post-COVID-19 condition rehabilitation

After severe and moderate cases of COVID-19 infection, many patients experienced newly emerged health issues. These disorders can affect the respiratory system, nervous system, musculoskeletal system, digestive system, immune system, and more.

Fortunately, our multidisciplinary experts have developed phage therapy to eliminate the effects of Covid-19, especially in treating secondary bacterial infections and restoring the microbiome.

Patients are treated according to their needs, goals, and priorities. Rehabilitation measures are evaluated regularly to determine if they need to be continued, adjusted, or stopped.

EPTC's COVID-19 rehabilitation program combines diagnostic and therapeutic elements.

We use various diagnostic instruments to study the body's systems: computed tomography, spirometry, electrocardiography, and laboratory work, including phage therapy research.

From a therapeutic perspective, phage therapy takes priority since it treats secondary infections in patients with post-COVID syndrome and restores and heals the disturbed microbiome.

Physiotherapy is also one of the key aspects of the whole process. One of the main directions is Pulmonary Rehabilitation since fibrous changes in the lungs are frequent during post-Covid syndrome.

Our rehabilitation process includes:

    • Deep oscillation - a unique, patented treatment method
  • Massage Therapy
  • Neuromuscular electrical stimulation
  • Nutritional evaluation and counseling

Ear, Nose and Throat:

Phage therapy for ENT infections includes both oral and local application for treatment of:

  • Otitis media, otitis externa
  • Sinusitis, maxillary and ethmoiditis
  • rhinitis
  • pharyngitis
  • post-operative prophylactic therapy

Phage therapy in Pediatric practice:

Phage therapy in pediatrics has distinct advantages when compared to antibiotics therapy. Children are the most vulnerable to the repercussions of antibiotic resistant bacteria. A viable antibacterial alternative makes the concept of antibiotic stewardship more attainable for pediatricians.

The following diseases can be treated using phage therapy:

  • Eye infections- bacterial conjunctivitis, blepharitis
  • Upper and lower respiratory tract diseases:
    • Otitis media, otitis externa
    • Sinusitis, rhinitis, pharyngitis
    • Laryngitis, tracheitis, chronic bacterial bronchitis, bronchiectaisis, cystic fibrosis associated infections and others.
  • Gastrointestinal diseases:
    • Bacterial gastroenteritis, irritable bowel syndrome, functional disorders-diarrhea, constipation,
  • Nosocomial infections
  • Prophylactic use
  • Antibiotic resistant infections:
    •  MRSA
    • VRE
    • CRE
    • ESBL
  • Antibiotic Intolerance (allergy)
  • Experimental use of phage therapy in Autistic spectrum disorder and PANDAS

Phage therapy in urology practice:

In urology today, inflammatory diseases of the uro-genital tract are very complicated to treat, especially when due to infections caused by antibiotic resistant bacteria. Chronic pyelonephritis, chronic bacterial cystitis, chronic epididymitits, chronic bacterial prostatitis, chronic urethritis and others are examples of the types of diseases which can be treated with phage therapy.

Most of our patients often have the experience of being treated with various broad spectrum antibiotics for many months or even years in various hospitals and clinics without success.

In our phage therapy center, years of collected clinical experience has given us the possiblity to successfully treat patients with chronic infections using a complex approach utilizing both the broad-spectrum standard phage preparations as well as individualizing patient treatment with custom phage preparations when necessary.

Complex treatment refers to a combination of modalities including oral and local application of bacteriophage preparations, and treatment in combination with other medications as necessary. All of which reduces the overall treatment time and improves outcomes.

Phage therapy in Gynecological practice:

The gynecology department of the Eliava Phage Therapy Center uses phage preparations in complex treatment for the following diseases:

  • Chronic bacterial infections
  • Acute and chronic vaginitis (vaginosis)
  • Cervicitis
  • Cystitis (chronic and acute)
  • Vulvo-vaginitis (chronic and acute)
  • Vaginal dysbiosis
  • Bacterial infections of the pelvic cavity

The most frequent causative agents for these diseases are:  E.Coli ,  Streptococcus spp.,  Staphylococcus spp. ,  Enterococcus spp. , Pseudomonas , Klebsiella, Proteus vulgaris, Proteus mirabilis, S. Viridans  and others.

Phage preparations can be used orally as well as in cream and suppository forms. We also use instillations into the urinary bladder very effectively in treating urinary disorders.

Phage therapy in Surgical infections:

Bacteriophage has been used extensively in surgery for 60-70 years. Extensive experience with phage use on the battlefield and post-war situations have proven phage therapy to be a truly effective prophylactic and treatment in wound care.

Phage can be used intraoperatively for treatment of osteomyelitis, abscesses and infected wounds.

Conservative treatment includes:

  • Chronic soft tissue infections: wounds, fistulas, infectious complications of trophic ulcers
  • Prophylactic use to prevent post-operative infections
  • Treatment of nosocomial infections

The internal medicine department treats the following diseases holistically with phage preparations:
